We develop biobased raw materials from birch bark that help industries move away from fossil-based solutions without compromising performance, reliability or scalability.

At Innomost, we transform underutilised forest industry side streams into high-value ingredients for cosmetics, packaging, coatings, adhesives and other industrial applications. By combining chemistry expertise with renewable resources, we enable companies to develop circular, biobased materials for modern manufacturing.

Innomost was founded by Dr Sami Selkälä, an organic chemist with extensive experience in the fine chemical industry.

During his career, he repeatedly encountered the same challenge. Most industrial raw materials were derived from fossil resources, while sustainable alternatives were often difficult to source or unsuitable for industrial-scale use.

This gap between sustainability ambitions and practical material solutions became the starting point for Innomost.

Seeking alternatives, Dr Selkälä began exploring how biobased materials could be developed for real-world industrial applications.

His research led him to birch, a widely available natural resource in Northern Europe. Birch bark contains valuable natural compounds such as betulin and suberin, which contribute to the tree’s natural protection against moisture, environmental stress and microbial exposure.

These properties make birch bark an exceptional source for developing high-performance biobased ingredients.

While the functional benefits of birch bark had long been recognised, one challenge remained: scalable processing.

Birch bark compounds had not previously been processed in a way that enabled consistent quality and reliable supply for industrial use.

To address this challenge, Innomost developed a patented technology that enables efficient extraction and purification of birch-based compounds. This technology allows the production of high-purity ingredients suitable for industrial applications in mass-scale.

Today, we operate a pilot production facility in Kokkola, Finland.

The facility produces up to ten tonnes of high-value biobased ingredients for industrial customers per year. In addition to production, our laboratory facilities support formulation testing, product development, and collaboration with partners.

We help our customer companies to replace fossil-based raw materials with biobased alternatives derived from renewable forest resources.

By upcycling birch bark from forest industry side streams, we contribute to the development of circular material solutions that combine sustainability with industrial performance.

Our goal is to help industries transition towards scalable, reliable and environmentally responsible materials for the future.

Our mission is to elevate our customers’ sales by helping them in the green transition while making next-generation products with our functional ingredients.

Our vision is to become a global leader in birch-derived biobased ingredients for industrial applications.
